Electronic Product
Management
Each year in California
hundreds of thousands of computers, copiers, fax machines,
printers, televisions, and other electronic equipment
become "obsolete" in the eyes of consumers.
Rapid advances in technology and expanding demand
for new features accelerate the generation of "old"
electronic equipment ("e-waste"). The result
is a growing challenge for businesses, residents,
and communities as they search for ways to reuse,
recycle, or properly dispose of this equipment.
To meet this challenge,
many communities are initiating electronic product
collection programs, manufacturers are developing
recycling programs for their customers, and innovative
reuse and recycling companies are finding new uses
for the old equipment. Consumers are also becoming
increasingly aware of the need for proper handling
of electronic equipment.
Electronic
Equipment Guidelines
The CIWMB, in partnership with DGS, developed Guideline
for Procurement, Use, and End-of-Life Management of
Electronic Equipment to improve State agency performance
in these areas. Please review the guidelines.
Many components
of electronic equipment--including metals, plastic,
and glass--can be reused or recycled, while others
may present environmental hazards if not managed correctly.
This Web site provides information and resources on
how to properly manage your electronic products.
